North Carolina History
North Carolina grew slowly as a state. The state had few good roads, large cities or schools(Harcourt, 2009, p. 87). North Carolina is a state of the southeast United States and borders the Atlantic Ocean. This state was admitted as one of the original 13 colonies. Native Americans inhabited North Carolina, before the European explorers came about. In 1712 North Carolina was separated from South Carolina and became a royal colony shortly after.
In 1776 North Carolina was given the right to vote for it's independence. After several decades this state was known as the "Rip Van Winkle State" because of it's slow process to find a stronger central government. In 1835 more political power was given to North Carolina and the industrial and agriculture areas showed growth. Transportation, such as plank roads and canals helped people move around at this time (Ricks, 2009).
