The Lumbee tribe ( largest tribe in North Carolina located east of the Mississippi River) used words such as "Juvember", which means slingshot to them. If you know alot about North Carolina or have traveled the state, you would probably have already known what this word means. Developing from the early settlement and movement of English speakers, regional dialects started to develop (Wolfram, 2006). A large amount of these English speakers came to North Carolina by water from England. Some of these English speakers came from what it known today as Virginia.
The pronunciation of "out and about" like "oat and aboat" was brought to North Carolina by the settlers from Tidewater Virginia (Wolfram, 2006). These people often brough slaves who worked in the cotton field as well as the tobacco fields. Having different race individuals, such as African Americans and Europeans caused a regional dialect that it typical of other states in the South. The pronucitation of the "r" sound after a vowel was often left out. Words such as corn would be pronounced as "co'n" and far was pronounced as "fah".
North Carolina has become more bilingual due to the fact that many Hispanic's have migrated to this state. This dialect will eventually be known as " Hispanic English ". Also, a distinct dialect has been developed by Africian Americans to mark black youth culture in the cities ( Reaser, 2006). Dialect reveals a cultural past and shows how it continues to develop over the years. Language is always changing and it never stands still (Reaser, 2006).
