Quilting
North Carolina has adapted to many traditions throughout the years. The tradition of quilting has stemed from the Appalachian mountains. These quilts are handmade and usually pieced together from pieces of fabric. The quilt is then stuffed with old cloth or cotton to ensure warmth and comfort. Quilts have always been a neccessity to have in the household ( Brock, 2010). Mountain families used quilting as a means of saving money as well as showing their artistic side. Quilting has been passed down by family and this still goes on in the Southern Appalachian mountians. Each patch is said to respresent family history throughout the Appalachian mountains. Today competitions are being held to show and honor the handiwork of these quilts.
Art Pottery
North Carolina's art pottery tradition traces back to the 1760's. During the 1760's immigrants potters from England and Germany, settled their families in Central North Carolina. While living on farms that were built on clay, these families made art pottery for sale and trade ( Reynolds, 2011). These potters turned ordinary pottery into decorative ceramics. During the early 20th century, potters adopted a movement and begin turning traditional pottery into different shapes and used new glazes. Today North Carolina art pottery is being recognized for it's beauty and it's artistic accomplishments.
